Commissioner says older people in Wales face mounting inequalities

OLDER people in Wales face mounting inequalities, older people’s commissioner Rhian Bowen-Davies warns in a report released today.

Growing Older in Wales: A Snapshot of Older People’s Experiences was published to mark one year since she took on the job.

“As highlighted by the report, these issues undermine people’s health, well-being and independence,” Ms Bowen-Davies said.

“I will be sharing my findings with the Welsh government and key public bodies, setting out the action that must be taken.”

Two-thirds of older people struggle to get a GP appointment, levels of dissatisfaction with social care services are higher in Wales than elsewhere in Britain and around a third of the over-75s have no internet access.

About a third of older people feel unsafe walking or travelling in their local area, or using public transport, and are at greater risk of experiencing some form of abuse than people of other age groups.

The report also says that older people face significant employment discrimination.
